LG Electronics have unveiled the design and specs of its upcoming Q-series smartphones prior to the official launch of the product. As per the announcement made by LG on their official website, the Q series will be available in three models – Q6, Q6+, and Q6α. Talking about the base model of Q series, LG Q6 will sport a 5.5-inch FHD+ Full vision display having an 18:9 aspect ratio, and come clad in a metal frame with minimal bezels. Other than that, the phone will carry octa-core Snapdragon 430 chipset at the hardware helm.

At the software part, Q6 will operate on the latest Android Nougat 7.1 software and will function on 3GB of RAM and 32GB of ROM. The phone also house a battery with 3000mAh capacity. In terms of optics, Q6 comes with a 13-megapixel single rear camera and at the front, the smartphones feature a 5-megapixel camera with wide-angle lens. LG has also added a square Camera Mode feature on the device which makes it easy to “share your squares” or create photo collages using multiple square images.

The lacking point of Q6 is that it will not feature fingerprint scanner, which is the need of the hour for smartphone users. Although LG has tried to cover this with their proprietary Face Recognition feature that allows owners to unlock the phone by reading their face. The connectivity options on the smartphones include 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, and USB Type-B 2.0.

LG Q6 Review

Design : 9/10

  • Well built, and feel quite sturdy in hand
  • Beautiful design – arguably the best looking device in the sub Rs 20k price category – in fact looks like a miniaturised version of LG’s premium flagship G6 – the metal side rails, along with the glossy plastic back give the phone an upmarket look
  • The edges are metallic and rounded, which makes the phone easier to grip – it is also well weighted and very ergonomic for the screen size it offers
  • No fingerprint scanner
  • The plastic back tends to scratch easily (so you will want to use a case)

Display : 9.5/10

  • Has the same Full Vision display that’s found in the LG G6, that will make it a conversation starter every time you take it out of your pocket – essentially, the display is a little taller than the standard 1080p resolution – it has a 2160 x 1080p resolution, which takes the aspect ratio from the standard 16:9 to 18:9 – in tandem, the top and bottom bezels have been drastically minimised, which adds to the phone’s unique look – moreover, the Full Vision display not only makes the phone look good, but makes the whole footprint smaller – this means, the LG Q6 with its 5.5-inch display, is just a hair bigger than say the 5-inch Lenovo Z2 Plus
  • As for the display quality, it is pretty good too, and one of the best in the category – viewing angles are very good, it is easily viewable outdoors and under direct sunlight, and with luminance readings of 605 lux, offers ample brightness as well – the display also has Gorilla Glass 3 protection on top for scratch protection and the touch response is quite good too

Software : 8.5/10

  • LG’s UI is decent in terms of aesthetics and functionality
  • No notification LED
  • The UI is decent but LG does include a lot of duplicate apps for pre-built Android functionality – all this bloatware could have been avoided

Performance : 8.5/10

  • Although day-to-day performance is decent, performance with processor-intensive apps/games is definitely behind the competition

Camera : 8.5/10

  • Decent rear camera – images have ample details and sharpness
  • The 1080p video recording is sharp and detailed, with good colors and excellent audio
  • The camera app is pretty bare bones apart from panorama and food mode, the phone doesn’t really let you tweak settings further
  • Average front facing camera – both dynamic range, and detail level are lacking

Audio : 8.5/10

  • Decent call quality
  • The speaker is located on the back side which means it can easily get muffled if you place the phone on a table or couch, face up – it also tends to sound tinny at high volumes

Battery : 9/10

  • Decent battery life – lasts a day with moderate use
  • Decent (though not exceptional) charging speed – 0 to 100 in a little over 2 hours

More : 8.5/10

  • On the whole, the Q6 is a good option for more casual users, who put more stock in design than internal hardware specs – but for users looking for more heavy-use apps/games, better performers like the Moto G5 Plus, Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, Honor 6X, Samsung Galaxy On Max etc will make more sense – all these smartphones offer better gaming performance (although day-to-day performance is pretty much same)
  • The phone does come with a “face unlock” feature – but it is a little slow
  • Uses micro-USB port instead of the more modern USB-C standard
