Realme 1 Review

Oppo, with the new online-only Realme brand is playing the specifications war, taking Xiaomi heads-on. The first smartphone is called Realme 1, which will be available exclusively via Amazon India. In the sea of smartphones where almost every phone looks alike, Oppo had done something novel. The first-ever smartphone in its budget yet youth-centric sub-brand, Realme, has a unique diamond cut 3D design at the rear. Embedded within the real glass, it reflects light in the same way a diamond does and looks different from every angle.

Design : 9/10

  • Bold, stunning design thanks to the diamond-like reflective body – this is a device that certainly stands out – it is housed inside a fibre-glass casing that has been cut at different angles such that each section of the glass back turns to a different shade of black when light is reflecting off it!
  • Lightweight and well built
  • No fingerprint sensor, so you have to rely on the face unlock for quick unlocking (which does work quite well)

Display : 9/10

  • Decent, modern 18:9 display with minimal bezels – which means that despite the large screen size, the phone will fit nicely into your hand
  • The display is decent on the whole, but outdoor visibility is pretty ordinary

Performance : 9.3/10

  • Good all-round performance, similar to Snapdragon 636 phones, like the Redmi Note 5 Pro

Camera : 9/10

  • Decent rear and front cameras – both the cameras support depth of field or Portrait effect, and Augmented Reality (AR) stickers
  • The rear camera pictures are reasonably crisp, and have decent color reproduction
  • The front camera relies heavily on Oppo’s AI algorithms to fine-tune the photos which results in good (if slightly artificial looking) photos
  • Overall, cameras are decent, but not quite up to the high benchmark of the Redmi Note 5 Pro

Battery : 8.9/10

  • Good battery life – easily gives over a day’s usage for an average user
  • No support for fast charging – the phones take a little over two hours to charge from zero to full

More : 9/10

  • Dedicated dual SIM card slots and microSD slot
  • Supports VoLTE on both the dual sim slots
  • On the whole, the Realme 1 offers an interesting design, fast performance and good battery life – and if these are the most important things, it may make for a good choice – but most people will find the likes of the Redmi Note 5 Pro and Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 to be much more complete and well-rounded phones

Verdict – Should You Buy The Realme 1

Oppo’s Realme 1 is a great attempt in the budget phone category. So No doubt, the Realme 1 is an impressive smartphone. It has a lot going in its favor, right from the premium looking glass back design, to power and performance. The front and cameras are also good for its price point. Face unlock is quick and works without any hiccups. Performance has also been good.

For Rs 8,990, the Realme 1 is a steal deal in a well-rounded package. But for those who can pay a bit more, I’d recommend the 6GB RAM with 128GB storage variant, which is priced at Rs 13,990. Of course, there are competitors such as the Redmi 5 and Honor 7A, in the lower range, and Realme 1 has an advantage over them. On the higher side, the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 is a good alternative too with stock Android, dual cameras and a massive 5,000mAh battery. The Honor 9 Lite with starting price of Rs 10,990 is another good pick.
